How to Keep Your Dog and Home Flea Free

When you become a dog parent, especially the dog mom of a fur baby who loves spending time outdoors, you learn that fleas and ticks can be a real issue. Thanks to the advice of family members who have had to deal with flea infestations, I’ve learned that the key to tackling fleas and ticks is prevention. Infestations can take weeks, sometimes months to get under control, so rather than cross my fingers that it’s something I never have to deal with, I take simple precautions to make sure Merlin, and our apartment, remain tick and flea free.
1. Use a prevention treatment.
My #1 tip in keeping your dog and home flea and tick free is using a preventative treatment. In our home, we use and swear by PetArmor Plus. We’ve been using it since the moment Merlin was old enough, and we thankfully haven’t had any flea or tick encounters. Not only can PetArmor Plus be used as a preventative treatment, but it can also be used to treat! The formula helps break the flea cycle by killing flea eggs and larvae for up to 12 weeks. It also kills ticks that may transmit Lyme disease. We live in a grassy area, that is known for having a lot of ticks, so I can’t even begin to explain the peace of mind I feel knowing that Merlin is protected.
2. Keep your home clean.
While even the cleanest homes can be infested with fleas, keeping your home clutter-free and as clean as possible, could potentially help you discover the problem before it’s too late. Flea eggs are often found in rugs or carpeting. Make sure to vacuum regularly!
3. Maintain your yard.
While PetArmor Plus will protect your dog, and prevent them from bringing fleas or ticks inside, humans can bring unwanted pests inside too! Maintain your lawn, and clean your yard regularly, to provide fewer hiding places for fleas or ticks.
Fleas and ticks can be present all year round, so I suggest keeping your pet protected with PetArmor Plus every month as well. PetArmor Plus is now available at PetSmart, one of our favorite retailers for all of Merlin’s essentials. They have great deals and shopping there is super convenient. You don’t need a prescription from your vet, which I love, and you can get $5 off PetArmor Plus for Dogs or Cats (3-count) from now until September.
When we first got Merlin three years ago, some would describe me as a crazy dog mom! While I’m definitely still overprotective, products like PetArmor Plus have put me at ease. Of course there are a million things I still worry about, but luckily fleas and ticks aren’t on that list!Last Updated: Sep 8, 2019
