Sound Bar
From the moment my husband and I purchased our home, I knew one thing for certain: I wanted a movie room. Ever since I was a little girl I’ve been obsessed with the idea of it. My mom even found a letter I wrote to her when I was 9, detailing how we could transform our living room into one when my youngest brother was born. The vision even included fresh flowers (it’s no surprise that I grew up to love decorating). Years later, when my husband and I first met, we bonded over our mutual adoration for movies. Naturally, he embraced my movie room concept wholeheartedly. I started curating pieces for the space from the moment we moved in. Now, nearly three years later, the space is a reality. It has become the heart of our home, where we gather as a family to enjoy movies, play board games, and spend time together. Undoubtedly, it’s my favorite spot in the entire house. I hope it inspires you if you’re looking to create a movie room of your very own.
The first piece we purchased for the space was a sofa. You can’t have a movie room without a cozy place to lounge. I’ve always wanted a Restoration Hardware cloud couch, but I just couldn’t justify the price. We ended up finding a similar style from Arhaus that achieved the same look for a bit less. Given our decision to go with a white sofa and our walls painted in a creamy white hue, I opted for wallpaper behind the couch. I know accent walls are kind of out of style, but I felt like it worked for this particular room.
Snack Bar
A standout feature of the movie room is definitely the bar area. My vision was to create a modern version of the classic movie theater snack bar. We included a beverage center for drinks, drawers for snacks, and additional storage space for other odds and ends. On the counter, I added in some fun candy dispensers that also double as decor. Above the cabinets, we added shelving to display glassware and collectibles. It’s the ultimate self-serve spot for pre-movie treats.
Movie Room Decor
While creating a calming atmosphere was a priority for our movie room, I also wanted to add elements of playfulness. I did this by decorating with games, legos sculptures, fun candles, coffee table books, and artwork. I found these movie posters on Etsy that perfectly complemented the neutral vibe of the room and added them to floating frames. And on the opposite wall, we displayed playing-card inspired artwork from one of our favorite artists, Andy Blank. It definitely tied in the game room aspect of the space.
I knew we would need quite a bit of storage space, so we opted for built-ins instead of traditional media furniture. Below the TV, we had cabinets installed to neatly house our collection of books, movies, board games, and collectibles. I love how they hid the clutter.
I couldn’t be happier with how everything came together and there is nothing I look forward to more than winding down in our movie room every night!
