Matt and I have been on many road trips throughout the years and at this point, I’d pretty much consider us pros! Typically, spending hours and hours in the car can feel a little daunting, but through a ton of trial and error, we’ve found a way to make our road trips fun and something we enjoy. If you’re headed on a road trip yourself this summer, I put together 5 easy ways you can make it more enjoyable. Don’t miss my road trip list here for my favorite car items, too!

Bring snacks… but not just any snacks

You can’t have a successful road trip without snacks, but this goes WELL beyond a bag of chips from the gas station. Don’t get me wrong, I love a quick stop, but once I stocked our car with snacks and drinks I was actually so excited to enjoy, it was a game changer! On our most recent trip out to the beach, I packed this lidded tray and filled it with a full board of snacks and treats (check it out here). It was so fun to make and even better to snack on during our drive. Don’t forget to bring an ice chest of drinks- I love stocking mine with Olipop!

Download an audiobook

I love listening to music and podcasts, but there’s something about getting lost in an audiobook for hours that makes a drive fly by! Sometimes I’ll save a book I’ve been wanting to read for a while for a long road trip and listen to it during the entire drive. I find it so entertaining and basically like watching a TV show- sometimes I end up not wanting a drive to end so I can keep listening! If you’re driving with others, download a book you can all enjoy and chat about it while you’re listening. There are so many free audiobooks on Spotify or try out an Audible membership!

Make pit stops

If you have the time, research a few spots to stop and enjoy along the way. This can be something as simple as stopping at a a cute coffee shop and walking around a little main street for 45 minutes, or bigger landmarks or destinations you’ve been wanting to check out. If your road trip is long, planning stops throughout the drive will make it so much more fun, and will give you a break from being in the car that isn’t the dining room at Taco Bell.

Get comfortable

Of course, comfy clothes are a must for a long drive, but why not bring along additional items to take your comfort to the next level? If I’m headed on a long drive, I love packing a pillow, blanket, and even extra cozy socks to make the journey more comfortable. Obviously, if you’re in the driver’s seat things are different, but if you’re the passenger princess a blanket is a must. I tend to reach for this pillow and blanket set as it’s made specifically for travel and doesn’t take up a bunch of space.

Document the journey

Bring a camera or use your smartphone to capture photos and videos of your road trip adventures. Shoot videos of your stops along the way, or even snap a few quick car selfies for memories to look back on! Creating a travel journal or blog can also be a fun way to document your experiences and share them with others, or even just for yourself to reminisce on the trip once it’s over.
