I’ve spent a lot of time at 30,000 feet. After 12 flights and countless layovers this year alone, I’ve finally perfected my packing system of traveling essentials. This comes after years of standing in crowded terminals, balancing my iced coffee in one hand and a slipping tote bag in the other. If you want to survive the endless delays and stay organized in the air, here are the 9 travel must-haves currently in my bag.

1. The Hands-Free Luggage System

The biggest pain point of travel is juggling all of your stuff. That awkward dance of trying to manage multiple bags while navigating through a sea of people. I’ve officially found a luggage system where everything connects. My carry-on clips directly to my checked bag, and my tote sits securely on top, giving me one free hand at all times.

Think about it, having one free hand while navigating a busy terminal is a total game-changer.:

  • You can hold your coffee and walk without your bag tipping over.
  • When you need to pull out your boarding pass or phone, you aren’t dropping a shoulder bag to do it.
  • No more wobbling bags while you try to hold the handrail.

2. Refillable Spray Hand Sanitizer

Airports are, let’s be real, germ hubs. From the security bins everyone touches to the tray tables that barely get cleaned, it’s pretty disgusting. I always keep hand sanitizer nearby, and I recently discovered this new one, that you can actually refill. It’s more eco-friendly than disposables and the mister makes it easy to use on the go.

3. Motion Sickness Tablets

This is the least glamorous item in my bag, but easily the most important. If you suffer from motion sickness, add these to your cart immediately. Whether you hit unexpected turbulence or have an hour long Uber ride from the airport to your hotel, you know that motion sickness can ruin your entire day (and the first day of your trip).

Even if I don’t think I’ll need them, having them within reach puts my mind at peace. They have saved me more times than I can count. I usually take one about 20 minutes before any sort of extended travel. It is a must for my travel essentials.

It’s refillable!
This lightweight hand sanitizer spray is perfect for keeping in your bag for an easy refresh on the go. The fine mist feels clean and never sticky, and it keep hands feeling hydrated, soothed, and smelling so good.
Take 20 minutes before!
If motion sickness always tries to ruin the fun, these non-drowsy chewables are a must for travel days. They help keep nausea away for up to 24 hours, and the raspberry flavor makes them so easy to take on the go.

4. Packing Pouches

I’m a firm believer that everything deserves a home. Throwing loose items into a suitcase is a recipe for a disaster, which is why I use the “pouch method”. Each pouch gets assigned it’s own category, like toiletries, tech, medicine, or snacks, and it makes finding things while traveling a million times easier.

5. Travel Pill Organizer

No one wants loose pills at the bottom of their bag. Trust me, I know. It’s a nightmare. I’ve had lids pop open in my bag before, and trying to identify a stray vitamin at the bottom of a dark pocket is not how I want to spend my layover.

I switched to this travel pill organizer. Twist to fill, twist to dispense, and no loose lid falling open in your pouch.

6. Travel-Sized Dry Shampoo

After a long flight, no one feels or looks their best. You’re dehydrated, your hair is flat from the headrest, and you just want to feel “human” again. And now my holy grail dry shampoo finally comes in a TSA-approved travel size. Bonus: it smells exactly like Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue! (iykyk)

A quick spray at the end of a flight doesn’t just fix your hair; it gives you that much needed reset. It’s the easiest and most essential way to walk off the plane feeling like you didn’t just spend half a day traveling.

Take your vitamins on-the-go!
This weekly pill organizer makes keeping up with medications so much easier with its stackable magnetic design and easy twist-open compartments. It’s compact, simple to use, and keeps everything organized for morning and evening routines.
Say goodbye to oily, plane hair!
This non-aerosol dry shampoo is so good for stretching out wash days without leaving your hair feeling dry or chalky. The lightweight powder absorbs oil, adds volume, and refreshes roots with no white cast while still keeping hair feeling soft and hydrated.

7. Bluetooth Airplane Audio Adapter

Airline headphones are notoriously uncomfortable, and their quality is…lacking. Plus, being physically attached to the airline screen with a wire is a hassle every time your seatmate needs to get up.

This tiny Bluetooth adapter lets you plug into the airplane TV and use your own noise-canceling headphones instead.

8. Magnetic Travel Toiletry Containers

Most travel bottles are frustrating. They leak, they’re hard to clean, and they roll around in your bag. These are simply the best travel containers I’ve ever used. They are magnetic, leak-proof, and fully customizable. They snap together in your toiletry bag to save a massive amount of space. Need I say more?

Organized Packing

9. Retractable Charger

Stop carrying five different cables tangled together. I use one retractable charger that rolls back up into a neat disc so I never have to deal with a knotted mess at the bottom of my bag. It’s easy, it’s useful, and it looks good. Enough said.

One charger that can do it all!
This compact charger is so perfect for travel, work, or keeping in your bag because the retractable cord means no tangled cables.

Final Thoughts: Building Your Own Travel System

Travel is completely unpredictable. Flights can be delayed, weather will change, and gate assignments will shift at the last minute. You can’t control the airline, but you can control everything else.

By investing in a system, rather than just a collection of random items, you can take away some of the stress involved with traveling. When everything has a home and every tool serves a purpose, you stop “surviving” your travel days and start thriving.
